Out of these cases, only around 5% resulted in birth defect. This data might not reflect confounding effects such as, SES, maternal health and awareness. As per an earlier epidemiological secondary research study, low SES, employment status of parents, and low education levels elevate risks for anencephaly, dextrotransposition of the great arteries, cleft palate, tetralogy of fallot.
