This data needs to be thoroughly analyzed for better comparisons. For example, an earlier epi study that compared pay gap for all professions suggested a decrease in pay gap from 0.79 to 0.95 taking variables (factors) such as, experience, education, location, nature of job into consideration. In the same way, we might see a similar reduction in pay gap while comparing physicians salary taking above factors into account.
This gap could certainly get magnified considering that there are two times licensed male physicians compared to female physicians in US. Further, female physicians tend to align their focus more towards family practice compared to a wider distribution in the type of practice for male physicians.
Social factors such as, race, and moral factors such as, honesty will also come into play. This suggestion is not to imply that there is not a gender based pay gap, but more to find the real pay gap.
By the way, another question that I would like to repeat is why should physicians be paid a lot more than many other professions, when many of the research findings included efforts from scientists, engineers and nurses?
