This Celtic practice changed in the eighth century when Pope Gregory III declared November 1st to be the day of feast for all the saints, and the night before was known as All Hollow's Eve.

This celebration further changed during the medieval period when the concept of "souling", where children and poor people went door to door to ask for donations or food in exchange for prayers.
